Smart is a German small-car manufacturer founded in 1994 and owned by DaimlerChrysler. The idea to create the brand came from the founder of Swatch (watchmaker), Nicolas Hayek. The company's name combines the first letters of the Swatch and Mercedes brands and the word “art”, because Smart cars were supposed to be eye-catching and extraordinary.
The assumptions were simple: the car had to be small, 2-seater, with a boot that could fit a case of beer and a bag of shopping, and still be cheap and safe. The engines were assembled in Berlin and the factory was established in Lorraine.
It has been producing exclusively electric cars since 2020.
